About Hispanic
Media Initiative
The Hispanic Media Initiative (HMI) is a program in the Department of Communication at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) focusing on the advancement of Hispanic media education, journalism, and research. HMI is the response to the successful creation of UTA News en Español in 2010, a Spanish-language television newscast produced by undergraduate students, recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), engaged in unique on-air broadcast journalism partnerships with Univision and Telemundo, invested in Hispanic media research and publications, and enjoying a healthy 100% graduation rate.

HMI houses UTA News en Español (#UTANE), a university Spanish-language television newscast unlike any other in the nation. UTANE leads the way in Spanish-language and bilingual broadcast journalism in the United States; it has successfully developed connections and collaborations with other universities leading to the creation of similar programs at institutions of higher education.
